We will be winding up trimester 1 by finishing up SPEAK, finishing one third of the roots and one third of the vocabulary, studying grammar/editing via SSWE (Study of Standard Written English exercises), studying phrases and accompanying punctuation and diagramming exercises, doing various prep/strategies for standardized tests :PSAT and SSAT and SAT tests…

 

Mon. 10-28 All blocks:  Roots test 4.  You have a SPEAK 3 quiz and Vocabulary 4 test this week.  Of course, you know to look ahead; plan ahead and to address roots, vocabulary, reading, grammar as needed.  You are working at different pace than your neighbor and probably on different things.  You have all the tools for success.  You are doing a great job; I bet this is becoming so much easier for all of you – you are being well trained for high school.  I love you!

Mon. 11-4 All blocks: SPEAK discussion, part 3; I will give out next book of choice assignment; this book will be a mystery selection.  I will give you an information sheet for parent signature as well.  You will not get a rubric for this assignment; however, on the due date (TBA) you will have an in-class writing assignment. Certainly, you may want to bring the book to class that day…  Once you start reading, take notes on the mystery/mysteries, the clues that distract and the most important clues and how they are linked that help solve the mystery. Grammar test is tomorrow. Vocabulary 5 test is Friday.

2 week blog/ 9-30--10-11

Summary:  For the next 2 weeks, we will be focusing on grammar; I will do a quick review from last year’s material to build on the new material (phrases); there will be several pop quizzes, as students must stay caught up day to day in order to apply new information to previously studied material.  We will also begin the book SPEAK and our study of resilient traits of children so that we can apply those traits to the main character and so that we may explore our own resilient traits.

 

 

Mon. 9-30 All blocks: Auto/biography book of choice assignment is due along with rubric, as always.  I will hand out next class novel SPEAK and make assignments. Part 1/First Marking Period is due 10-7;  part 2/Second Marking period is due 10-21; part 3/Third Marking Period is due 10-31; part 4/Fourth Marking Period is due in next trimester/date will be announced later.  Each reading due date will come with a quiz over your reading, of course, and then with a few days of discussion that follow.  Look ahead on due dates and agenda: Roots 2 test tomorrow (COMPREHENSIVE); vocabulary test Friday.

Summary for next two weeks:  These are funky 3-day  weeks again – be sure to take home whatever books you need on Wednesdays so that you are prepared for the following Mondays.  You have a couple writing assignments with due dates approaching; you also have some tests…  We are about to dive in to grammar.  I will approach grammar in various ways: I will continue to discuss errors in first set of papers, entertain your questions, review grammar on the board, urge you to do exercises in the grammar book that relate to your specific errors (see the sheet that I gave with the related page numbers), work SSWEs (the SAT part that tests grammar), which stands for Study of Standard Written English, and see me when you are struggling.  One type of error that often shows up in writing is a diction error, the reason for the diction sheet and attendant test…

 

 

 

Mon. 9-16 All blocks: Literary terms over first half of literary terms sheets given on first day of class; we will also finish up analogies and/or contextual reading exercises. You need to start thinking about (reviewing) the grammar you learned last year. (I know Mr. Rifkin did a good job because I know all that he covered.  I intend to have a quick review and move forward…) When grammar study starts, you should expect a pop quiz everyday on everything we have studied in here re: grammar.  That means you should go home and memorize all definitions and lists given to you the day they are given to you.  A certain amount of memorization is important because it is necessary in application to structures we will study.  ALWAYS KEEP UP WITH THE MEMORY WORK.  In the past, many students have gotten behind on this and cannot build each day as we move forward; they just got more and more behind.  Do not let the ol’ snowball dilemma take place in your grammar study!  Stay caught up.  Are you getting book of choice read?  Address vocabulary, roots, diction and lit. terms according to your needs and upcoming dates. Work on imagery assignment.  See agenda.

Blog/Fields 9-2 -- 9-13

 

Summary:  We are wrapping up discussions on summer reading, A Separate Peace, and preparing for the test on same novel.  We will be studying the elements of the novel and short story; at same time, we will examine literary trends.  Students will take in depth look at imagery and will be assigned an imagery/descriptive writing assignment, “Thinking of Happiness.”

 

 

Mon. 9-2 Labor Day is supposed to be a day to rest from labor; if you have looked and planned ahead and are caught up, then I hope you will rest and relax and enjoy this day.  Reading your book of choice may fit nicely into an hour or two of relaxation today…

Tues. 9-3 “A” day: all blocks: I hope you had a nice long weekend…Teacher needs to double check some ASP definitions with you if they have not been completed.  We will read and discuss “The Story of an Hour,” which demonstrates several literary trends, some of which you heard about when we discussed ASP.  We will look at others on literary trends sheet and in the short story. Be sure your nightly homework addresses some time for roots, vocabulary, literary terms, and diction (see the long diction sheet given the first day).

Wed. 9-4 Half day/all blocks: If we meet classes (as of printing date, administration has indicated there is possibility of special programs today), we will talk more about “Story of an Hour” and literary trends. This story is, in part, preparation for next writing assignment: a creative writing assignment that focuses on imagery. You have 2 days of holidays coming up; look ahead and be sure you are caught up.  I hope you do not work over these holidays and that they are meaningful ones to you and your family.

BLOG 8-18 -- 8-30 :)

 

Mon. 8-19 All blocks: I will hand out the first book of choice assignment; this will be over a biography or autobiography; see and hear explanation/rubric.  Your book should be read by 9-23; your writing assignment is due 9-30.  Pacing yourselves carefully in this course will be necessary.  Also, you will each present your summer reading illustrations to the class.  Along with the explanation of the illustration, you will also explain how it relates to ASP.  Bring in parent signatures for auto/biography assignment tomorrow for a quiz grade of 100.  You do not get a 0 for not returning such communication with home; you simply get an “x” in the grade book.  Such is the case anytime I send home similar updates re: outside reading; however, since a parent often has to make a special trip to library or bookstore – unless you use e-reader, which may not be best way to read for material you will have to remember—I try to give a heads up to home.

Fri. 8-23 All blocks: This is last day I will take parent signatures for quiz grade. After vocabulary test, we will continue ASP discussion. You have vocabulary test 1 (30 minutes).  Remember, you have to be able to spell words, know definitions, know how to use correctly (so you must know part of speech), know antonyms and synonyms. The best preparation would be to now have done all the exercises in the vocabulary book – over an extended time, not during one night – learned synonyms, antonyms, definitions, made some flashcards, had mom or dad call them out to you. The above will always be the best way to study vocabulary, but I will probably not include this reminder again.  The vocabulary tests are designed to be an easy way to get an A or B as a major grade in order to offset any of the more difficult assignments and perhaps lower grades that come along.  Do not take the short cut with vocabulary and roots; keep up and earn great grades on those 2 assessments! BLOG for week 1/Fields

 

Fields/8^th Language Arts/WEEK 1

 

Students: Any one of these dates/expectations could change due to unforeseen circumstances… We could get so involved in a discussion one day that we fail to move ahead at the predicted pace, I could be absent, we could have a different schedule, etc.  The best way to use the blog and your agenda is to look ahead always; see what lies AHEAD.  If you do not look ahead and plan ahead, you may come to class one day unprepared.  Once I hand out the day-by-day tracking of the course, you will have all dates for the first trimester and insert them into agendas. This lengthy project takes quite a lot of time and should be in your hands by Friday of this week.

 

SUMMARY:

This week we will be doing a little bit of “housekeeping” during the first couple of days… I have several documents to hand out re: upcoming assignments; we will enter a few dates on AGENDAS, talk about the weekly BLOG, teacher policies, student expectations, intruder drills, fire drills, AED’s location in case of emergency, etc.  As far as academics this week, we will have quiz on summer reading, A Separate Peace, (indicated hereafter as ASP) and begin our discussion of this classic novel.  Students will submit or present ideas from the written work they did.  Here is how the breakdown of the week will look:

 

Monday, 8-12: All students: A DAY : Welcome, handouts, due dates for upcoming assignments, books distributed, instructions re: how we will approach discussion of ASP and what I expect from students in those discussions.  Students have HOMEWORK:  Bring in signed syllabus; bring in summer reading work for the next time we meet; be ready for quiz on ASP.

Tuesday: 8-13: Blocks 2, 3,4:  I will collect signed syllabi; I will make first writing assignment: On-level students will write 5 paragraph essay revealing most important parts of their personal museums as an assignment that accompanies one of the themes in ASP; students will have ASP quiz over summer reading.  Students should have their summer reading work in class today, although we may not get to that work until Wednesday.  Students have HOMEWORK: Tomorrow,  if your block meets this class, you should have typed in New Roman Times/12 font 3 questions that you have about ASP; also, you should have typed 3 direct quotes that you feel were most important or most confusing or just plain interesting.  This is often a good jumping off spot for class discussions.  These may or may not reflect actual dialogue between characters; you choose.  Please do not conspire with a neighbor about what to choose; use your own brain.  Since you were asked to annotate or at least to take notes in your reading, chances are you have several underlined.  Use correct quotation marks and MLA documentation that you learned last year.  If you do not recall, go online and ask ol’ GOOGLE.

Wednesday: 8-14: Blocks 2, 7, 6, 3  Blocks 6 & 7,  Turn in syllabi and take SP quiz;  see and do what was assigned yesterday for the kids who met with me; look above for your homework and for what will be done in class today;  blocks 2 & 3 will be working with summer reading; we will be in literary circle up on the sofa and in front of the room, where we always discuss literature; feel free to have a drink with you or a snack. Starting here, you should all be working on a vocabulary exercise every night; also, you probably want to make flash cards; if you do a little work each night re: vocabulary, chances are you will truly learn/know these words as opposed to just having them in short term memory for test. Remember for every vocab test, you need to spell the word, be able to find contextual clues that call for the correct word in a sentence, know antonyms and synonyms. You should also start studying roots packet/page 1 for your first roots test; do a little each night to make this task easier as well.  For roots tests, you need to know root’s meaning, at least 2 of the words and definitions that are root derivatives and show up in right hand column, and be able to figure out new words you’ve NEVER seen based on your root knowledge. REMEMBER:  You have ONGOING HOMEWORK throughout the entire 8^th grade that involves studying vocabulary, studying roots, and once we get to grammar, studying grammar, the last of which will be subject to frequent POP quizzes.  Please keep up each day; do your best – this is an important year for you…  I hope that your first week went well.
