Roots 5 test; assign RESEARCH pros/cons re: totalitarian government vs. democracy, social media, free Speech and responsibilities of, unlimited internet access (pros and cons), nationalism, globalism, role of propaganda in government, real news vs. fake news, 24 hour news shows/blogs and twitter and challenges/pitfalls, communication forms (letters to editor, editorials, and editorial cartoons), immigration, “security” cameras in public places, right to privacy, government control of media, censorship, etc. You will need to prepare no less than 10 notecards with DOCUMENTED FACTS to present your point of view.  You may have to defend a point of view that you do not personally endorse/support.

Mon. 1-8 All blks. B Day.  Handouts; TED talk: make assignment re: editorial cartoon, letter to editor, editorial – be ready to present at some point?  Introduction to Fahrenheit 451 and to its correlation with integrated unit. We start integrated weeklong unit on Civil Discourse, and we will tie in parts of Fahrenheit 451 with some exercise on Civil Discourse, which you prepared/researched before the holidays.  Let’s remember the word “civil” as we go forward.  Today, you should have completed Fahrenheit 451, part 1. You do not have to have questions and quotes for Part 1; however, you will need questions and quotes for Parts 2 and 3…Be ready for quiz/discussion and link to unit…. 

Start reading Part 2 of Fahrenheit 451; due 1-18.

Part 3 of Fahrenheit 451 is due 1-31- or 2-1 depending on block number. Prepare 3 questions/3 quotes per usual and use correct MLA.
